Some of the needs of our supported hospitals include...

    A New Vehicle at Kivulini

The team at Kivulini Maternity Centre urgently need reliable transport. Their ambulance – used not only for maternity emergencies but also to safely transport women with obstetric fistula – was recently damaged during civil unrest and needs to be repaired. At the same time, demand for care continues to grow as the hospital’s reputation spreads.

With women walking for days over rough, unpredictable terrain to reach the hospital, a second dependable vehicle is essential.

    Solar Panels at VMCH

The electricity supply at Vision Maternity Care Hospital has become more erratic in recent years and the hospital is reliant on using generators. However, regional conflict has made road transport of all goods difficult, in particular fuel and diesel. The lines for diesel can be kilometers long and inflation has meant prices are growing. Sometimes there is no diesel to be able to run the generator. This has a huge impact on the hospital operations, communications and services.

Installing solar panels will enable their life-saving services to run smoothly, safely and consistently.

    On-Site Laundry in CAR

In Central African Republic, where Dr Andrew operates during week-long fistula camps, the local hospital staff must carry all the laundry to the river to be washed. Then, when the washing is draped over hedges to dry, little bugs from the bushes get into the sheets.

Installing a laundry with running water, concrete sinks and a septic tank, will mean staff won’t have to take dirty linen to wash in the river, the river won’t be polluted and the waste will go safely into the septic tank. A covered drying area with lines would also enable staff to dry in the rainy season, away from the bushes (and insects!).

    New Generator in CAR

The generator at the hospital in Central African Republic needs replacing. It has required regular maintenance this year. Reliable electricity is critical for hospital services, and to ensure Dr Andrew is able to operate safely on women during fistula camps. For example, constant monitoring is required for women who’ve had anaesthesia for surgery, and even simple things like lighting makes a big difference for the surgeon and support team.  In Australia, we take reliable power for granted – but a new generator will be a huge blessing for the hospital staff and patients in Galo.
