Construction Nearly Complete at Sonic Kworo Hospital!

May 12, 2026

The near completion of Sonic Kworo Hospital marks a significant milestone for the Barbara May Foundation with the establishment of our first partner hospital in Uganda.

In northern Uganda’s Pader District, community members and officials recently gathered outside the hospital to celebrate the end of a multi-year construction journey.

While an official opening will take place later this year, this moment marked an important transition: from construction to care.

Photos from the day, shared by Sonic Healthcare Foundation, offer a first glimpse of the facility (below).

A New Chapter in Pader District

Located in a rural region of northern Uganda, Sonic Kworo Hospital will serve communities where access to safe maternity care remains limited.

For many women in the surrounding regions, reaching a health facility means a long and unpredictable journey. When complications arise during labour, delays in receiving skilled care can have serious consequences.

This hospital has been established to help address that gap – providing both routine maternity services and the capacity to manage emergencies when they occur.

Building on Shared Experience

The Barbara May Foundation’s support of Sonic Kworo Hospital reflects a broader, long-term approach to maternal healthcare, developed over decades of experience supporting hospitals in South Sudan, CAR, Ethiopia and Tanzania. We are committed to supporting locally-led hospitals, strengthening clinical capacity, and investing in systems that facilitate safe, caring maternal healthcare over the long-term.

The construction of the Sonic Kworo Hospital has been delivered through a partnership between Te-Kworo Foundation, funding partners Sonic Healthcare Foundation, and the Barbara May Foundation.

Together, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to strengthening maternal healthcare in a sustainable and locally-led way, to bring about the most benefit to mothers, babies and communities.

Preparing to Welcome Patients

Although construction is nearly complete, the work of preparing the hospital for clinical care is well underway. The team are now busy establishing systems, testing and installing equipment, recruiting and training staff (and much more) to ensure the hospital is ready to deliver safe, high-quality maternity care from its first day of operation.

In the coming months, Sonic Kworo Hospital is expected to begin welcoming its first patients.

You’re Part of Something Special

The completion of Sonic Kworo Hospital is not only a milestone for the local community, it is part of a broader effort to improve access to safe childbirth across the country.

It reflects what can be achieved through long-term partnership, clinical expertise, and the support of donors committed to meaningful, sustained impact.

As the hospital prepares to open its doors, your support continues to play a vital role in ensuring women can access the care they need.

The life-changing impact is about to begin.
