The Faith Behind the Work: A New Podcast Feature

Jul 3, 2026

Our Medical Director, Dr Andrew Browning AM, recently joined historian and broadcaster John Dickson on the Undeceptions podcast, for an episode titled “The Good Missionary.”

It was a wide-ranging conversation, but at its heart were the same two drivers in everything we do:

  • the women suffering and dying because of a lack of access to basic healthcare during pregnancy and labour,
  • and the faith that calls people to serve them.

Dr Andrew spoke candidly about what a fistula injury can do to a woman’s life – the isolation, the shame, the years spent hidden away by families and communities who don’t understand what’s happened to them. And he spoke just as candidly about why he, and the volunteers and medical staff we work alongside, keep showing up for them: a conviction that every person carries the image of God, and that love shown practically, patiently, over decades, is what actually changes lives.

It was also an honest conversation about the realities of his life’s work – the hardship, the danger, the years away from home. But also about the little known fact it sits within — that Christians were the first to come up with the concept of a public hospital.

The Barbara May Foundation was founded on Christian principles, and those same values – Compassion, Integrity and Respect – continue to guide everything we do today.
