Lebmogne’s Story: Celebrating Safe Childbirth

Oct 6, 2025

Lebmogne was only 14 when she was first pregnant.

She laboured for two days but, tragically, gave birth to a stillborn baby. Lebmonge had also developed a fistula and was leaking urine and faeces uncontrollably. She was still just a teenager.

Eventually Lebmogne was treated for her fistula at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia, where she was cured.

Years later, Lebmogne remarried and became pregnant again. Our team at Vision Maternity Care Hospital, under Dr Birhanu’s care, ensured she received the care needed during her next pregnancy. Lebmogne’s baby was delivered safely through a Caesarean Section and she remained cured of her fistul injury.

Here Lebmogne is pictured with her husband and her healthy 2.7kg newborn baby girl!

“Thanks to God and thanks for Barbara May Foundation for supporting us. We saved a mother and baby and prevented another fistula” – Dr Birhanu

An operation can cure a fistula… but quality maternity care can prevent fistulas in the first place.
