The staff at Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), NSW, have collectively donated OVER $2 MILLION to support the Barbara May Maternity Hospital in Mille, Ethiopia.
Incredible Long-Term Partnership
The staff at SLHD have been supporting the Barbara May Foundation’s work in the Afar region of Ethiopia for approximately fifteen years, regularly donating $1 or $2 from their weekly salaries. The Barbara May Maternity Hospital was built in 2011 to provide safe maternal healthcare for women in the remote desert-like, rural Afar region.
In 2024 alone, the Barbara May Foundation saw:
- 633 babies born at the Barbara May Maternity Hospital in Mille, Ethiopia
- Safe delivery of 10,537 babies through the Rural Maternity Health Program
On behalf of everyone at the Barbara May Foundation, we want to thank SLHD making this life-saving work possible.

Special note from Valerie Browning AM
“You stepped out of your highly technical medical world to embrace ours, our world of the bare facts where you make life-saving and securing motherhood possible!!
Mothers who could not have babies have had them, mothers who had faced newborn death repeatedly in their home went off from the hospital with a bouncing baby; so many mothers who would otherwise have died were saved…. Then there are the fistula repairs, the prolapsed uteruses and other extra-ordinary gynaecology issues solved. We here are overawed at your constant care and walking with us through all the tragedies that Afar life brings….
This and so much more is not possible without you all walking with us!!!”
To all staff, colleagues and team members who signed up to the Sydney Local Health District Workplace Giving Program, we want to thank you directly for your incredible and sustained generosity.
Your workplace could support one of our hospitals too!
Workplace Giving is a simple program to make regular tax-deductible donations from your salary to your preferred charity. Barbara May Foundation is a registered Australian charity with DGR status.
